Be2Camp

Exploring Web 2.0 in the built environment

Be2camp history

2008

  • early June 2008 - Be2camp started as a Twitter chat between Martin Brown and Paul Wilkinson, following Martin's attendance at Barcamp-type events, suggesting we do 'something' for the built environment. This discussion was picked by Jodie Miners in Australia through Twitter, and through Second Life with Pam Broviak from Illinois, USA.

  • 16 June 2008 - The first Be2camp online presence was established - and we first started talking about creating an online network and potentially holding events.
  • August 2008 - The first Be2camp website (built on the Ning social network platform) was created - and became the focal point for planning our first unconference event.
  • 10 October 2008 - Be2camp 2008 was held at the Building Centre in London, organised largely by Paul and Martin, with support from Jodie (who travelled from Sydney to attend), while Pam coordinated the event's Second Life inputs.

2009

  • 15 May 2009 - Be2camp North was held at FACT in Liverpool, organised by Paul, Martin and Adrian McEwen, was our second unconference focused on Web 2.0 and the built environment.
  • 16 June 2009 - Be2party! was a Be2camp Tweet-up held in various locations (London, Preston, Tuscan AZ, etc), marking the first birthday of Be2camp: the world's first online community dedicated to Web 2.0 and the built environment.
  • 12 August 2009 - Be2camp Brum was held in Birmingham, organised by Lorna Parsons, Rob Annable and Soulla Stylianou (with support, as ever, from Paul and Martin), taking Be2camp to England's second city.
  • 7-8 October 2009 - Be2camp@WorkingBuildings2009, organised by Paul and Martin, was run over two days at London's Olympia exhibition halls, in parallel with UBM's three WorkingBuildings shows: Energy Solutions Expo, M&E: The Building Services Event, and Total Workplace Management: the FM & Estates Event.
  • 27 October 2009 - the Be2camp community supported the RIBA's Stakeholder event, RIBAforum09, in London on the theme of Web 2.0.
